Background of the study
Code‑mixing, the fluid alternation between languages within a conversation, is a prominent feature of Nigerian digital communication. WhatsApp group chats, in particular, provide a natural setting for code‑mixing due to their informal and interactive nature (Ibrahim, 2023). In these groups, users frequently blend indigenous languages with English, creating a distinctive hybrid discourse that reflects the country’s rich linguistic diversity. This study explores the dynamics of code‑mixing in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats, examining the social, cultural, and contextual factors that drive this linguistic phenomenon (Okafor, 2024). By analyzing textual interactions, the research aims to document patterns of language mixing, identify the motivations behind such practices, and assess their impact on group identity and communication efficiency (Adebayo, 2023). The findings will contribute to broader discussions on multilingualism in digital environments and offer insights into the evolution of language in socially diverse contexts.

Statement of the problem
Despite widespread observations of code‑mixing in Nigerian social media, particularly in WhatsApp group chats, there is limited empirical research focusing specifically on this phenomenon. Existing studies often treat code‑mixing as a homogeneous practice without considering the unique features of WhatsApp group interactions. This gap hinders our understanding of how platform-specific affordances shape language mixing and the implications for cultural and linguistic identity in digital communication (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze code‑mixing patterns in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats.
  2. To identify socio-cultural factors influencing language mixing in these settings.
  3. To evaluate the impact of code‑mixing on group identity and communication.

Research questions

  1. How does code‑mixing manifest in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats?
  2. What factors influence these language mixing practices?
  3. What are the effects of code‑mixing on group communication and identity?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth appraisal of code‑mixing in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats. The insights gained will be valuable for linguists and social media researchers by enhancing our understanding of multilingual digital communication and its implications for cultural identity (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on code‑mixing within Nigerian WhatsApp group chats, without extending to other platforms or offline interactions.

Definitions of terms

  • Code‑Mixing: The practice of mixing two or more languages in a single conversation.
  • WhatsApp Group Chats: Multi-user messaging conversations on WhatsApp.
  • Multilingualism: The use of multiple languages within a communicative context.
